Blogger Tom Patterson: Obamacare just another entitlement

The local daily had a front-page headline this week which read “Case could boost cost of health insurance.” In it, the Republic’s ace healthcare reporter tried to make the case that it would be financial disaster if the Supreme Court decided the Obamacare law means what it says and what the sponsors said they intended.

If the court rules that the subsidies in Obamacare are indeed only available in those exchanges that are “established by the state,” that would trigger a 132 percent increase in the health insurance premiums paid by Arizonans in subsidized plans, according to the report.

But the cost of healthcare wouldn’t go up if the court rules in favor of the law as written. It would only change who pays for the increased cost of health care insurance under Obamacare – if nothing is done. Believe me, something will be done.

It’s an important point because that’s the fatal flaw of Obamacare. It never did “bend the cost curve down,” as was promised. In fact, it assures that health care will cost more than ever, with its mandates for approved policies, its “guaranteed issue” incentivizing healthy people to contribute nothing until they got sick and the near complete removal of any market mechanisms to control costs.

Obamacare is nothing more than another entitlement, this one administered by the private sector. Cutting Obamacare would increase overall health care costs? Give me a break.
