Oborne: State Route 88, Lost Dutchman Boulevard will kill again

Yes, the corner of State Route 88 and Lost Dutchman Boulevard will kill again. Already two deaths in the last nine years, in addition to 20 accidents requiring police attendance.

As this is an Arizona Department of Transportation intersection, at the suggestion of the good folks at Apache Junction City Hall, I wrote to our two state reps — Fillmore and Townsend — a month ago.  I received no acknowledgement nor response of any kind from either of them. Some representation.  I hope that when you have a need for “representation” that you fare better than me.

I have spoken with several engineers about this. The first steps they recommend are: 1) make the intersection a right angle — 90 degrees; and 2) bring the west side of Lost Dutchman Boulevard up to the grade level of State Route 88 for better, safer sightlines.

The City of Apache Junction has offered to place the flashers removed from Superstition Boulevard and State Route 88 at this intersection and this will help. But without the first two steps, we’ll continue to have accidents and deaths at this killer intersection in our city.

Let’s hope it will not involve you or your friend/family member. But it is the main intersection used by RVers accessing Lost Dutchman State Park, so please take special care at SR88 and Lost Dutchman Boulevard.
