Jacquie Smith: Approve override; ‘our children deserve the best’

Our school district has made very tough financial decisions over the last few years, and have provided a quality education while balancing a tight budget. While these financial goals have been met, it has not been an ideal situation for our students, teachers and community as a whole.

Thirty-five years ago, kindergarteners learned the alphabet and shapes; today they read books and learn to use computers. Our schools need to keep up and look forward, not backward. Adequately funding our schools allows us to at least maintain, and hopefully surpass, educational standards and goals.

Endowing our schools may also allow the future leaders of our country to experience art, drama, music, physical education classes and gifted learner classes, all of which have been decimated by budget cuts.
Yes, I have a vested interest in the AJUSD override election– four of my grandchildren are students. But that is not the only reason: I live here, work here, play here, shop here. This is where my friends and family live. This is my home.

I love our community, as I believe most people who live here do. I am a 20-year resident, but have been enjoying all that Apache Junction has to offer for more than 35 years. Our fellow residents are, by and large, caring people—when there is a call for help, our community responds! This school override is such a call.

Please do not fall back on the rhetoric of what was standard schooling from half a century ago. Our children deserve the best we can offer, as our parents and grandparents did for us. I urge all my fellow residents to invest in our children, and community, and vote yes on the AJUSD override.
