Second grade students at Four Peaks Elementary School enjoyed a rock show on Monday, May 11, with “rock stars” Wanda Sisk, Linn Mistrot, Nancy Suthann, Ruth Flynn, Ed Lindsey, and Glenn Schuler; all from the Apache Junction Rock and Gem Club. Students learned the identifying characteristics of metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous rocks and were able to ask club members about the rock samples that were on display. Students also brought rocks they had found for presenters to identify. Each student received a rose or amethyst necklace and rock samples to take home.
The presentation was a precursor to the club’s junior program, which they hope to launch at the start of the new school year. Junior Club chair Wanda Sisk explained, “Our goal is to introduce children to the outdoors and to the lapidary arts.” Club members will be available for presentations at all grade levels.
“Most of our members are seniors who are enthusiastic rock hounds and are involved in the rock and mineral arts including lapidary, wire wrapping, and other forms of rock art creation,” states the club website, www.ajrockclub.com. “Our members are interested in passing on their interest of these arts to members of the younger generations.”
