Preparations for Operation Christmas Child, a program that sends shoe boxes filled with toiletries, sweets and other small gifts overseas, are under way in Apache Junction. The filled shoe boxes will be collected at John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 1130 E. Broadway Ave., according to local organizer Betty Blunk, who has been involved in the program for eight years.

This year’s goal is to collect 1,500 boxes, Ms. Blunk said.

“We take boxes from individuals and different groups. The biggest contributors are the churches,” Ms. Blunk said.

The collection will take place 10 a.m.-noon daily from Nov. 16 to Nov. 23 and noon-12:30 p.m. on that Sunday.

For more information, call Ms. Blunk at 480-982-6548 or the church at 480-982-1268.
