A city-initiated rezoning of a recreational vehicle park adds three RV spaces and removes a billboard, according to Apache Junction documents.

The Apache Junction Planning and Zoning Commission on April 23 voted unanimously to recommend that the City Council approve a city-initiated rezoning request for the Prickly Pear RV Park at 1630 W. Apache Trail.

The rezoning is from recreational vehicle park to old west commercial by planned development, and included two additional conditions prior to approval.

“The change in zoning will accommodate the nonconforming RV park, result in the removal of the billboard, allow the owner to recover three rental spaces and allow for potential future commercial redevelopment,” a staff report for the planning commission states.

The billboard is on the southeast corner of the T-shaped property, along Apache Trail.

New billboards are prohibited in the City of Apache Junction.

Vice Chair Peter Heck added two conditions to the motion prior to the vote, condition No. 5: “The owner of the property will cause to have taken down and removed the billboard by a date no later than Oct. 31, 2019; and condition No. 6, failure to comply with condition No. 5 will result in planning staff bringing the case back to planning and zoning commission for further action,” he said.

The City Council is to consider the rezoning Tuesday, May 23. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the council chambers, 200 E. Superstition Blvd.
