Apache Junction Food Bank President Joan Clair has announced the appointment of Myra Garcia as the organization’s executive director.

Ms. Garcia reports to the food bank board of directors and is responsible for carrying out the mission of the food bank according to board-established policies. The mission includes strategic planning, fiscal management, acquisition and distribution of food, volunteer recruitment and training, and community relations, according to a press release.

Ms. Garcia, a resident of Gold Canyon, grew up in Douglas, Arizona, and attended Ottawa University in California, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in labor relations and human resources and a master’s degree in business administration.

She has held executive positions with Mercury Insurance, Leslie Pools and most recently with Safeway.

Ms. Garcia described her first day on the job as “the fulfillment I have been looking for. I am honored and blessed to be helping others and working with such dedicated volunteers. I look forward to continuing and strengthening our mission to feed the hungry in East Valley communities,” she said in the release.

The Apache Junction Food Bank is a nonprofit organization that relies on cash and food donations and volunteers. It served 35,000 people in 2014 from its facility at 575 N. Idaho Road Suite 701 in Apache Junction.
