Forty-four years ago this week the top news stories for the Nov. 11, 1971, Apache Sentinel, the precursor to the Mesa Independent newspaper, included: Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held at the Highlander Center, a new self-service laundry and dry-cleaning facility in Hopi-Land Shopping Plaza in the 8600 block of East Apache Trail.
