The following is a calendar of entertainment, classes and events offered June 24-July 25  in and near Apache Junction.

June 24-Wednesday
Free Produce Distribution: Summer hours: 9 a.m., The Center, 2066 W. Apache Trail. Doors will open for registration at 9 a.m.; a cooking demonstration will take place at 9:15 a.m. The produce is limited and served on a first-come, first-served basis. June 25-Thursday
AARP Smart Driver Course: 12:30 p.m., Apache Junction City Conference Center, 1001 N. Idaho Road. This course provides research-based information to help drivers update driving knowledge and skills. Bring driver’s license, AARP membership card and a pen/pencil to class. The fee for AARP members is $18.75 and for non-members is $25. For more information, call 480-983-2181.

Bull-Riding: 7:30 p.m., Thursdays and Saturdays at The Hitching Post, 2341 N. Apache Trail in Apache Junction. Watch the riders practice on Thursdays and compete on Saturdays. Fun Movie Fridays — “Penguins of Madagascar”: 8:30 a.m.-noon. Meet at the Apache Junction Multi-Generational Center, 1035 N. Idaho Road, to board a van to Harkins Theatres. $5. Space is limited. The van will stop at Cactus Canyon Junior High School, 801 W. Southern Ave., to pick up kids during open gym. A soda and popcorn combo will be available for $4.50 (in addition to the $5 fee). Parents Night Out — Glow in the Dark Night: 5:30-10 p.m., Apache Junction Multi-Generational Center, 1035 N. Idaho Road. For ages 5-12. Itty Bitty Beach Party: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Superstition Shadows Aquatic Center, 1091 W. Southern Ave. in Apache Junction. $2. Open to children ages 6 and under and their parents. Splish-splash in the pool with the little ones. Join Apache Junction Parks and Recreation water-safety instructors for this children’s event. Instructors will lead games and activities for the children with prizes and water toys. They will even bring out some fun water toys. Presented by Apache Junction Parks and Recreation. June 27-Saturday

June 29-July 17
Summer Open Gym: Monday-Friday, Apache Junction Multi-Generational Center, 1035 N. Idaho Road, for first-fourth graders; and Cactus Canyon Junior High School, 801 W. Southern Ave., for first-eighth-graders. Morning (7:30 a.m.-1 p.m.) and afternoon (12:30-6 p.m.) sessions are offered. $100 for two weeks of either morning or afternoon sessions. Receive a $25 discount for signing up for both morning and afternoon sessions. Presented by Apache Junction Parks and Recreation. The program will provide children with fun recreational activities to keep them busy over the summer. They will participate in free play as well as structured group time including arts and crafts, games, sports, cooking and science. Each site will pick a theme to decorate their gym and will complete projects based on the theme. All participants must wear tennis shoes and bring a sack lunch each day. Open gym is not a licensed daycare facility. Children are free to check themselves in and out of the program. Apache Junction Unified School District will once again offer the free lunch program at the Cactus Canyon open gym site. To register for drop-in, stop by the park and recreation office at 1001 N. July 4-Saturday
Fourth of July Daylong Events: The city’s daylong schedule of activities begins at 8 a.m. with a co-ed volleyball sand tournament at Superstition Shadows Aquatic Center, 1091 W. Southern Ave. Sign-ups begin at 7:15 a.m. and are limited to the first eight teams. Free swimming for volleyball players. The regular swim fees for spectators applies; they are $1 for children and $2 for adult. The aquatic center will be open for public swimming from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Regular swim fees apply. Aquatic events include water games, races and the obstacle course. Races will be split into appropriate age categories for ages 5 and older. Prizes will be awarded to those who participate. Sign-up sheets and times of the races will be posted pool side by the manager’s office. Night events begin at 6 p.m. at the Apache Junction High School athletic field on Southern Avenue just east of Ironwood Road. Game booths and a kids zone will be open 6-9 p.m. Live entertainment by the band Reign-N-Country will be presented 7-9 p.m. The Apache Junction Little League will provide free watermelon while the supply lasts. Judging for the bicycle, wagon and tricycle decorating contest starts at 6:30 p.m. The fireworks show starts at 9 p.m.; it is presented by Republic Services. For more information, call 480-983-2181.

Learn to make, bake and take cupcakes kids can make, eat or share. A new cupcake creation will be made each day, Participants will create the batter for a new batch for the next day. Fit Families Basketball Bash: 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Apache Junction Multi-Generational Center, 1035 N. Idaho Road. Free. Presented by Apache Junction Parks and Recreation. This Fit Family event will be filled with action-packed basketball-type activities. Prizes will be given out for contests and raffles. No advanced registration is required. National Day of the Cowboy Celebration and Cowboy Reunion: 6:30-11 p.m., Elks Lodge No. 2349, 2455 N. Highway 88, on the northeast corner of Highway 88 and Lost Dutchman. $5 admission at the door. Must be 21 or older to attend. Entertainment will be provided by the Diamond Country Band. Burgers and brats will be served for $5. Activities include food, raffles, charity jail and an appearance by the Fireball Promo Girls. All proceeds will benefit local youth charities, including the Apache Junction 4-H Club.
