The Apache Junction/Gold Canyon/Peralta Trail Save Our Schools organization will hold a “kick-off canvass” meeting at 9 a.m., Saturday, July 11, at Cobb’s Restaurant, 944 W. Apache Trail in Apache Junction. The public may attend, according to a press release.

The group was created with a vision to prepare the children of Apache Junction and Gold Canyon for success in life and to build stronger community support for public education, according to its Facebook page: AJ/GC Save Our Schools Discussion. Its mission is to work for adequate funding for Apache Junction schools through both local and state funding sources, according to the Facebook page.

It was organized last fall after community meetings were conducted by the Apache Junction Unified School District about its $2.7 million budget shortfall and why the school district needed voters to pass a proposed 15 percent maintenance and operations budget override during the Nov. 4 general election.

After voters failed to pass the override, the organization set a goal to place a new override on the ballot this fall.

The Apache Junction Unified School District Governing Board on June 9 voted 5-0 to call for a 15 percent maintenance and operations override election in November.
