Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office to graduate Spanish Language Citizens Academy

When the 18 students in the Spanish Language Citizens Academy graduate Nov. 7 in a ceremony at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office headquarters in downtown Phoenix, Sheriff Joe Arpaio will offer each graduate a special opportunity: The chance to go on a deputy ride-along. Students will get to choose among the different Sheriff’s Office patrol areas for their ride.

“While we appreciate the students learning about our operations by going through the academy, we want to continue the relationship with our graduates going forward,” Sheriff Arpaio said in a press release. “The more we know of each other, the better we can work with each other in the years ahead.”

Spanish-speaking officers and deputies presented the classes in this academy on a number of topics, including criminal investigations, jail intelligence and programs and MCSO’s role in terrorism detection and prevention. The group also toured Tent City Jail, MASH II, Lower Buckeye Jail, the Crime Lab, the Food Factory, and the Sheriff’s Office Firearms Range, where students were permitted to fire a variety of weapons.

The graduation ceremony is set for noon at Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, 550 W. Jackson Street, and includes a visit with Sheriff Arpaio and a luncheon. The ride-alongs will be held over the next several weeks.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has more than 900 employees of Hispanic heritage, a total representing 26 percent of its workforce. Three out of three deputy chiefs that oversee enforcement divisions within the Sheriff’s Office are Hispanic.
