Gateway Airport continues land use compatibility plan update

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is working to update its Airport Land Use Compatibility Plan for the airport and the surrounding area, which includes the towns of Queen Creek and Gilbert, part of the City of Mesa and unincorporated Maricopa and Pinal counties.

A public meeting will be held to share updates with the public on the ALUCP process at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Chandler-Gilbert Community College at Gateway, Bridget Hall within the Higley Room 7360 E. Tahoe Ave. in Mesa.

The Airport Authority is owned and operated by the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority, which consists of Apache Junction, Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek, Gila River Indian Community and Phoenix. Gateway Airport offers nonstop passenger service to 38 cities via Allegiant and has 1,000 acres of undeveloped land available for future job growth in the East Valley.

The primary focus of the plan update is to examine the suitability of the current Airport Planning Area boundaries, overflight zones, and land use planning policies. PGMAA is committed to ensuring that contemporary tools and methodologies are reflected in the preparation of the plan update, including reevaluated long-term aircraft noise exposure and land use planning guidelines.

The ALUCP will reflect the intent of PMGAA to protect for long-term compatibility of the airport with surrounding communities by preventing the encroachment of non-compatible land uses into areas of long-term noise exposure risk.

Completion of the Draft ALUCP is expected by mid-2016.  The current APA, originally established in 1996 as part of the Williams Regional Planning Study and updated in 2000 with the adoption of the 14 CFR Part 150 Noise Compatibility Study for the Airport, is 85± square miles and comprises three overflight zones for zoning and land use considerations by local land use authorities including the city of Mesa, the towns of Queen Creek and Gilbert, and Maricopa and Pinal counties.
