They have names like the Dragons, Scrappers, Sand Gnats and Grasshoppers.
They are the teams of the Apache Junction Little League, and they began their 2014 season with an opening day ceremony at the Little League Complex, 1700 W. Broadway Road in Apache Junction, and game play at the complex and Prospector Park, 3015 N. Idaho Road in Apache Junction.
This season introduced new teams to the league, Krista Parks, a volunteer communications representative for the league, said during a phone interview April 10. Team members are drafted each year, she said. The league has a tradition of dedicating two ballfields at the Little League Complex.
This year’s fields were dedicated to the nation’s soldiers who are missing in action and their families, and to Richard Favia of Apache Junction for his work to obtain team sponsors.
“The league has low registration fees because of all our sponsorships,” Mrs. Parks said.
The baseball teams’ home games are played at the Little League Complex, the junior baseball games are played at Superstition Shadows Park, 1091 W. Southern Ave. in Apache Junction, and the softball home games are played at Prospector Park, Mrs. Parks said.
